It appears that, even as early as 1964, the dissent in the Church took the form of an alternative magisterium, to which certain politicians appealed as though it exercised a higher authority than the Pope.

As a former resident in the Diocese of Clifton and the magnificent county of Gloucestershire, I just want to say how nice it is to find someone blogging from those parts. I hope you find blogging fruitful and full of friendship. The Catholic blog world does seem to be (for the most part)an orthodox and safe community.

Thank you, JARay - and all the way from Australia! I have read your comments on other blogs and have always found them very interesting. Perhaps you too will start a blog; at first I made myself the only reader, until I (more or less) overcame my nervousness. I'm so impressed by all the bells and whistles on the famous Catholic blogs; I'm not at all confident with technical things, so this blog is going to be rather Heath Robinson in comparison.

I have been into one church in the Diocese of Clifton and that is in Dulverton. I thought it a little gem. I was on my way to Morebath which is a place I had to see since reading Eamon Duffy's books.
